GUIDE 05 · BASIC SUPPLY

Checking the basic energy supply tariff.

What basic supply means in Germany, why it is not automatically wrong and when a closer comparison is useful.

As of 17 October 2026 · about 4 minutes to read

Basic supply ensures that households continue to receive electricity or gas. It is an important safety net, but it is still worth understanding the current price and terms.

What basic supply does

It generally applies when no other supply contract is active or when a change has not started smoothly. It helps avoid an interruption in supply.

It is not automatically unsuitable for every situation. However, prices and terms can differ from other available tariffs, so a quiet review may be useful.

When to look more closely

Check your annual consumption, current energy price and basic charge. Then consider whether you need flexibility because of a move or whether a longer price guarantee is more important.

Avoid deciding from a single monthly instalment. The expected annual cost and the conditions around it give a clearer picture.

A short checklist

  • current supplier and tariff name
  • energy price and basic charge
  • annual consumption
  • your need for flexibility or a guarantee
Good to know: Compare the complete terms and share personal information only when it is needed for a specific step you have chosen.

Important note

This guide gives general information for energy contracts in Germany. It does not replace an assessment of your individual contract, deadlines or legal situation.
