GUIDE 06 · BILL

Checking an electricity bill: seven useful details.

The parts of an electricity bill that help you understand consumption, price and contract terms.

As of 17 October 2026 · about 4 minutes to read

An electricity bill can look complicated. You do not need to memorise every line: a few details usually provide a clear basis for understanding the current situation.

The seven useful details

Check the billing period, annual consumption in kilowatt-hours, energy price, basic charge, meter reading and meter number, instalments and final balance, and the tariff name with contract information.

Together, these details explain how the amount was calculated. A high total on its own does not show whether the cause is consumption, a longer billing period, changed prices or instalments that were too low.

Protect personal data

Bills contain sensitive information. For a general first enquiry, postcode, energy type, annual consumption and current supplier are often enough.

Do not share bank details, full contract numbers or identity documents in public comments or groups. Send only the information needed for a concrete step you have requested.

A short checklist

  • billing period
  • annual consumption
  • energy price and basic charge
  • meter reading and tariff information
Good to know: Compare the complete terms and share personal information only when it is needed for a specific step you have chosen.

Important note

This guide gives general information for energy contracts in Germany. It does not replace an assessment of your individual contract, deadlines or legal situation.
