GUIDE 11 · ANNUAL BILL

Instalments and the annual energy bill explained.

What monthly instalments, annual consumption and the annual bill tell you about electricity and gas costs.

As of 17 October 2026 · about 4 minutes to read

The monthly instalment is an advance payment. Whether it fits your actual use becomes clear only when consumption and the annual bill are considered together.

The key terms

The annual consumption in kilowatt-hours is the central basis for judging energy costs. The energy price applies per kWh and the basic charge is fixed; both belong together.

The annual bill compares advance payments with actual costs. Depending on the result, there may be a balance to pay or a credit.

Why instalments change

A supplier may adjust instalments after a price change, a different expected consumption or a previous annual-bill difference. Gas use can be particularly uneven through the year.

Check the billing period, consumption, meter reading and price information before deciding whether an adjustment looks plausible.

A short checklist

  • billing period
  • consumption compared with prior years
  • actual or estimated meter reading
  • energy price, basic charge and instalment
