GUIDE 13 · METER DATA

Meter number and market location ID: where to find them.

What the German meter number and MaLo-ID identify, how they differ and when they are actually needed.

As of 17 October 2026 · about 4 minutes to read

Both details help identify an energy supply point, but they are not the same. They are usually not needed for a first general tariff enquiry.

The difference

The meter number belongs to the physical electricity or gas meter. It is normally printed on the device and often appears on the bill; it can change if the meter is replaced.

The German market location ID (MaLo-ID) identifies the place where energy is consumed. It helps market participants assign the correct supply point.

When to use them

They can be requested for a concrete supplier switch, registration or move. Which item is needed depends on the energy type and process.

You can normally find the details on the latest bill, in the supplier's online portal, on the meter or, when moving, in handover documents.

A short checklist

  • latest electricity or gas bill
  • supplier online portal
  • meter number on the device
  • move-in or handover documents
Good to know: Compare the complete terms and share personal information only when it is needed for a specific step you have chosen.
