GUIDE 08 · PREPARATION

Preparing an energy tariff check: five helpful details.

A simple checklist for an initial electricity or gas tariff conversation without sharing unnecessary sensitive data.

As of 17 October 2026 · about 4 minutes to read

For a first, fair overview you do not need a large collection of documents. A few relevant details are more useful than sending everything at once.

Five details that help

Start with postcode, electricity, gas or both, annual consumption if known, the current supplier and tariff, and any special situation such as a move or price increase.

These details help put the contract in context. They do not require bank data, copies of identity documents or a complete bill for an initial general enquiry.

What comes later

A meter number or market location ID can be useful when a specific supplier change, registration or move is being processed.

Share sensitive information only through a suitable channel and only when it is really necessary for a step you want to take.

A short checklist

  • postcode
  • energy type
  • annual consumption if known
  • current supplier, contract end or special situation
Good to know: Compare the complete terms and share personal information only when it is needed for a specific step you have chosen.

Important note

This guide gives general information for energy contracts in Germany. It does not replace an assessment of your individual contract, deadlines or legal situation.
