GUIDE 01 · ELECTRICITY

Changing electricity supplier: how the process works.

The important documents, cancellation points and contract terms to consider when changing an electricity supplier in Germany.

As of 17 October 2026 · about 4 minutes to read

Changing supplier does not have to be complicated. A sensible switch starts with the current contract, annual consumption and the terms of the new offer – not with a single savings number.

A clear four-step process

Check your current supplier, annual consumption, contract end date and cancellation period.

Compare a new tariff using the energy price, basic charge, term, price guarantee, bonus conditions and what happens after the first year.

For an ordinary cancellation, the new supplier can usually manage the process once instructed. For a special cancellation right, act yourself in good time.

Wait for the contract confirmation and planned supply start date. Electricity continues to be supplied through the same grid during a normal switch.

Information that helps

For an initial check, annual consumption, postcode and supply address are usually enough. The latest annual bill can help you find these details.

A meter number or market location ID may be needed later for a concrete process, but not for a first general enquiry.

A short checklist

  • annual consumption or latest bill
  • postcode and supply address
  • current supplier and contract end date
  • price guarantee and bonus conditions
Good to know: Compare the complete terms and share personal information only when it is needed for a specific step you have chosen.
