GUIDE 02 · GAS

Changing gas supplier: the points that matter.

How to prepare a gas supplier switch and compare more than an introductory price.

As of 17 October 2026 · about 4 minutes to read

A gas contract can be reviewed just as systematically as an electricity contract. The annual consumption, contractual deadline and full price structure are more useful than a single headline number.

Prepare the switch

The latest annual bill normally shows your annual gas consumption. This is a much better basis than a rough estimate.

Make a note of the current supplier, contract end date, cancellation period and any bonus. This shows whether a change is useful now or later.

Compare the whole contract

A suitable offer includes the energy price, basic charge, term, price guarantee, bonus conditions and the renewal after the first year.

A normal supplier change should not interrupt supply. If a new contract does not start seamlessly, supply generally continues, often initially under the basic supply arrangement.

A short checklist

  • annual gas consumption
  • current supplier and tariff
  • contract term and cancellation period
  • address and meter details when required
Good to know: Compare the complete terms and share personal information only when it is needed for a specific step you have chosen.

Important note

This guide gives general information for energy contracts in Germany. It does not replace an assessment of your individual contract, deadlines or legal situation.
